Sherman Police Department's Racial Profiling Policy
It is the policy of the Sherman Police Department to give equal treatment, under the law, to all people, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, politics, national origin, lifestyle, or similar characteristics. The officers of the Sherman Police Department will only stop or detain citizens when reasonable suspicion or probable cause exists to believe they have committed, are committing, or are about to commit a violation of the law, or for other lawful purposes. Officers of the Sherman Police Department are strictly prohibited from initiating any action that constitutes racial or bias-based profiling.

Definition of Racial Profiling
Racial profiling means a law enforcement-initiated action based on an individual's race, ethnicity, or national origin rather than on the individual's behavior or on information identifying the individual as having engaged in criminal activity.

Acts Constituting Racial Profiling
Acts that constitute racial profiling are those that initiate enforcement action, such as a motor vehicle stop, a detention, a search, issuance of a citation, or an arrest based solely upon an individual's race, ethnicity, or national origin, or on the basis of racial or ethnic stereotypes, rather than upon the individual's behavior.

Filing a Complaint
Racial profiling by officers is strictly prohibited by the Sherman Police Department. Any person who believes that a peace officer employed by the department has engaged in racial profiling may file a complaint.

Citizens wishing to file a complaint against an employee/officer of the Sherman Police Department may do so in several different ways:
1. Download the Complaint Document, complete it and either bring or mail to SPD. Complaint documents are also available at the Sherman Police Department.
2. Contact any SPD supervisor; or
3. Contact: SPD Office of Professional Standards, Lt. Jeremy Cox.

Texas State Law requires that all complaints against police officers must be in writing and signed by the person making the complaint.
